Vivian Maier - Her Discovered Work

Imagine finding 100,000 mostly medium format negatives and a ton of undeveloped rolls of film in an auction in Chicago belonging to street photographer Vivian Maier would be pretty amazing. Blog here with updates.

Marco Santucci

Today we had Marco Santucci come in to give a talk, Marco is the MD of Santucci and Co. a leading photographers agent, having started of by representing Elaine Constantine after they both left university, jumping into the deep end as Elaine's career took off. The main points that I found fromt the talk were:

- how he finds new photographers
  • recommendations
  • Work as an assistant for a photographer he knows
  • un-solicted email/mail - getting 5-10 a day
  • he also makes mental notes of emerging photographers work who he admires and follows their career.

- The Eurostar campaign shot by Venetia Dearden, was shot using real customers as apposed to model/hyper reality that advertising is, it meant Venetia could shoot the campaign as an editorial/reportage project, I have never heard of an advertising campaign like this but I think it worked well, maybe this is the future.

- Sometimes insider knowledge can help gain contracts, having found a new photographer was needed for an Aerie campaign, they got together some Aerie clothes, sent the photogorapher to Cornwall with three models and showed the results to Aerie and gained the contract.

- Don't be over confident, let the work talk for itself and every time you see a client take new work to show them.

Jocelyn Bain Hogg - Muse

I went to the opening of Jocelyn Bain Hogg's Muse at Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff on Friday. I had never been to the gallery before as it is relatively new this being the third exhibition, but was welcomed by the owners who were very friendly, Jocelyn's new work based on J.G. Ballard's The kindness of Women where he states that beauty is the square inch of skin on waking up to your loved one, the close up photographs depict an honest intimate insight in to the un-retouched female form. Challenging the modern day search for air-brushed perfection. This work may seem somewhat different at first from his other work such as the firm and Pleasure Island, but when I asked him he said that his work relates to those things that we as modern day society idolise and fantasise about. The large prints gave the oppertunity for the viewer to get a larger than life view of what some people may consider "imperfections" of the female form, putting the viewer in a slight discomfort.
