Sophy Monk

I wanted to document the dog races – the hope and despair and the dreams of instant wealth. There is an underclass realism of a subculture dominated by old aged men and like-minded social kin.
I wanted to convey that loneliness and desperation by working with the desolate light, empty spaces, mid 60s décor and symbolic colour. Allied with an economy in decline and a recession over-due, my images describe an aspect of historic British culture struggling to retain a sense of stability and the divide of winning and losing in 2008. Hopefully the images demonstrate more intimately, the reality and consequences of a short cut to short-term wealth.
The photographs in this series were made at the Portsmouth Greyhound Races and The Ladbrokes in Winchester.

Debut 2010

Ice Cream by Sydney Southam
ICE CREAM
SYDNEY SOUTHAM
A film made from 16 mm footage appropriated from my late father's childhood, this piece explores themes of memory, innocence lost, and death. I am using footage depicting my family, shot decades before I was born, to explore my own complicated relationship with my childhood which ended abruptly with the suicide of my father when I was seven years old. Here, Ice Cream acts as a metaphor for a youth that we all experience and mourn once it is gone.

Catch-up
Haven't really said what's been going on with me lately been so busy sorting lot's of things out. To start I have graduated from AUCB and am now entering the big world of photography, to coincide I updated/completely changed my website.
